The idea’s core principles:-
- Non violent. Violence will only lead to more violence. Any violence is, of course, unacceptable – but also it will only make matters worse, not better. Strong feelings that arise from facing climate reality must be channelled into doing work and helping others to face up to it. As this poem by Rudyard Kipling tells us: “don’t give way to hating”.
- Non aggressive. Anger and hatred can grow when a person, or a nation, feels alone, powerless and scared. We can avoid these feelings by working together to feel empowered, courageous and united. Fear and sadness are natural in a situation like this and must be accepted and worked through, but they can be overcome, and you can feel better once you have done that.
- Non judgemental. It is too easy to judge people who don’t listen, do nothing or even work against us in this important task. Instead of judging them we need to understand that these behaviours are rooted in a lifetime of trying to avoid fear, trying to cope and trying to stay ahead. Feeling empathy rather than anger or judgement will help us eventually to help those people face climate reality.
- Not obligatory – no one should ever feel pressured into talking about or facing up to climate change or the idea. It is something people can face only when they choose to, and when they feel ready and supported.
- Not politically aligned – there is nothing socialist or right wing about the idea. It is not about fairness or about competition. It is only about how best to learn about, cope with and act on Abrupt Climate Change. That is not a politically aligned idea.
- Admit failure and learn without pride – in order to learn and improve quickly. There is no time left for ego and pride. This is all of working together, looking for the best, not the worst, in each other and ourselves. A small amount of pride has its place – when we see that we are being courageous and determined and see what we have achieved. But only a little 😉
